Mechanical Engineering is one of the core branches in engineering. It applies the principles of physics and materials science for design, analysis, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems. It also includes the usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of various day-to-day life appliances.

The field of mechanical engineering requires an understanding of core concepts from mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, and structural analysis. Mechanical engineers use these core principles along with latest tools like computer aided analysis and design to analyse power plants, industrial equipment and machinery, HVAC systems, transportation systems, aircrafts, marine, robotic and more.

The School of Mechanical Engineering (SMEC) was established in the year 2017 at VIT Bhopal University and offers, undergraduate and research programmes in Mechanical and Aerospace engineering. The Mechanical Engineering faculty of SMEC specializes in Machine Design, Thermal & Fluid Sciences and Manufacturing Engineering. Some of the important laboratories for B. Tech Mechanical Engineering at VIT Bhopal University are Strength of Materials Laboratory, Materials Engineering and Technology Laboratory, Thermal Engineering Systems Laboratory, CAD/CAM Laboratory, Machining Processes and Metrology Laboratory, Manufacturing Processes Laboratory and Central Workshop.

Mechanical Engineering is a core engineering branch but recently with the development in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Leaning, this core branch has reached new horizons. Students joining B. Tech Mechanical Engineering programme will undertake new product development using these advanced techniques. In future students will mainly study the interdisciplinary courses like Mechatronics, Automation which mainly requires knowledge of coding and control systems. Therefore students joining B. Tech Mechanical Engineering programme shall be eligible to a large spectrum of job profiles.

VIT Bhopal has an all doctorate Faculty Team. The faculty have good academic and research background and are the real strength of School of Mechanical Engineering. They make students very comfortable in the subjects and also encourage the students to undergo research. Also our state of the art labs give students chance to perform various academic and research activities in the lab. The course curriculum is updated regularly looking to the industry demands. Furthermore, various updated elective courses help students to select courses of their choice.
